Matt Western, a senior UK MP and chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, has formally proposed a moratorium on cryptocurrency donations to political parties. The measure targets potential foreign interference risks ahead of the next general election.

The proposal WOULD temporarily block crypto contributions until the Electoral Commission establishes statutory guidance. Western specifically warned about hostile state actors exploiting pseudonymous crypto channels to influence UK political finance. His letter to Housing Secretary Steve Reed urges inclusion of the ban in the forthcoming Representation of the People Bill.

Recommendations include restricting donations to FCA-registered crypto services and prohibiting funds linked to mixers or anonymous sources. The MOVE reflects growing scrutiny of cryptocurrency's role in democratic processes, though no specific digital assets were implicated in the proposal.
